How to open a ball pit: steps and what you need

Opening a ball pit is a project about a venue, permits and a playground, in that order. This guide gives you the whole path and what you should have decided at each step, so you do not buy anything too early.

The steps, in order

  1. Define the business. Which audience (0–3, 3–8 years, families), whether there will be birthday parties, a café or only play, and how many people you expect at once.
  2. Choose the venue. Check the usable floor area, the ceiling height (it limits the levels of the structure), access, toilets and ventilation. Before you sign the lease, confirm with the local authority that the activity is allowed in that venue.
  3. Ask for the playground design. With the plans and measurements of the venue, the manufacturer designs the layout and shows it to you before manufacturing.
  4. Apply for the permits. There is usually an activity licence or declaration and a technical project. What is required changes by country, region and municipality: read about it here.
  5. Take out insurance. Public liability insurance is usually required for activities open to the public; confirm it with your authority and your insurer.
  6. Manufacturing and installation. The playground is made to the design and installed at your venue. Ask for it to comply with the European standards EN 1176 and EN 1177.
  7. Prepare operations. Staff, rules of use for families, daily cleaning and a maintenance plan.
  8. Open and measure. Visits, the hours that fill up and average spend will tell you where to expand.

What to decide before asking for a quote

  • Usable floor area and ceiling height of the venue.
  • Audience and ages.
  • Whether you want a baby zone, a café or a party room.
  • City or country (it affects transport and regulations).
  • Approximate budget and desired opening date, if you have them.

With that we prepare a custom proposal with no obligation. Here is how we work: from consultation to opening day.

For guidance only. Requirements depend on your country, region and local authority: check them with the relevant authority before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to open a ball pit?

A suitable venue, the design and installation of the playground, the activity permits required in your area, insurance and a cleaning and maintenance plan. The order matters: first check that the venue works, then design and buy.

How long does it take to open a ball pit?

It depends on the permits and the size of the project. We confirm manufacturing and installation lead times in the quote, once we know your venue.

Can I start with a small playground and extend it later?

Yes. It can be designed in phases and extended later from what you already have. It is worth saying so when you ask for the design, so the space is left ready.
